Magnolia Tree Apartments is managed with digital tools for your peace of mind and to avoid inconveniencing you. We currently partner with the property management software company Innago. Eighty percent (80%) of your request can be done through this platform, making it easy for residents to submit maintenance request and manage their home online.

Magnolia Tree Apartments was built around the late 18th century. The building was once the Portlock family homestead mansion surrounded by farmland. Surprisingly, it was not always on Hamilton St. Th building stood near the corner of Portlock Road and Franklin Street until 1939, when it was purchased by Mary, a formidable woman. 

Mary wanted the property to be in front of an outlet of the Elizabeth River, so she could have lovely waterfront views. Everyone told her it would be impossible to move the house several miles to the water, but Mary was determined. She hired several local workmen and they rolled the house on giant timbers to the water on Hamilton St; but, Mary's vision didn't stop there. When the contractors were setting the new foundation, Mary told them to turn the house 180 degrees so the front of the building facing the water. This is why the part of the building that faces the main street is actually the back of the building. 

The building started off as a family mansion, but due to its' size, it morphed into a hospital during the Civil War, a charitable house, and then it was slowly converted into apartments. In the present day, the four apartments are being renovated into beautiful farmhouse modern renovated units with pockets of historic charm. Today's residents can thank Mary for the peaceful waterfront views each unit gets to enjoy. It was named Magnolia Tree Apartments due to the large Magnolia tree that stands tall at the very front of the property.
